Submitted to the NANOTUBE'05 Conference: Photoluminescence from SWNTs and DWNTs dispersed in saccharide solution Takashi Shimada1 , Yuhei Miyauchi1 , Toshiki Sugai2,3 , Hisanori Shinohara2,3, and Shigeo Maruyama1 1The University of Tokyo 2Nagoya University 3CREST, JST Contact e-mail: [email protected] Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy is a powerful tool to investigate the chirality distribution of CNTs in addition to Raman spectroscopy. Up to date, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) are often used for PL as suspender of CNTs in aqueous condition. Since these materials are well known to origin of water pollution, alternative materials are desired for particular applications. In this study, we have investigated PL spectra of SWNTs and DWNTs, which were dispersed in saccharide solutions. In terms of CNTs concentration, carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC) is reported to be the best chemical [1, 2]. However, the CMC-dispersion tends to quench emission peaks due to too high density of CNTs, especially for HiPco-SWNT. Pectine extracted from apple and citrus also enable us to observe distinct PL peaks of CNTs. These saccharide/CNTs solutions show some red shift in compared to SDS/CNTs and SDBS/CNTs solutions. The environmental effect of PL peak shifts due to surfactants and outer nanotube for DWNTs is systematically studied. [1] Takahashi et al., Jpn J. Appl. Phys. 43, 3636 (2004). Carrier transport properties in single-walled carbon nanotubes studied by photoluminescence spectroscopy

We have investigated the photoluminescence (PL) of in individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) placed in field-effect transistor structures to study carrier transport in the SWNT. The relation between the recombination lifetime and carrier transit time has been evaluated from the drain-field dependence of PL intensity. Time-resolved photoluminescence of SWNTs dispersed in surfactant so...

A Review of Double-Walled and Triple-Walled Carbon Nanotube Synthesis and Applications

Doubleand triple-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs and TWNTs) consist of coaxially-nested two and three single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). They act as the geometrical bridge between SWNTs and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), providing an ideal model for studying the coupling interactions between different shells in MWNTs. Within this context, this article comprehensively reviews various...

2.2 Important Spectral and Polarized Properties of Semiconducting SWNT Photoluminescence

Photoluminescence (PL) of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) [1] has been intensively studied for the optical characterization of SWNTs. By plotting PL emission intensities as a function of emission and excitation photon energy, Bachilo et al. [2] obtained a two-dimensional map of relative emission intensities. Hereafter, we refer to such a plot of PL excitation and emission spectra as a " ...

Selective optical property modification of double-walled carbon nanotubes by fluorination.

We found that by fluorination of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs), it is possible to suppress only the Raman radial breathing mode and absorption peaks from the outer (large diameter) tubes of DWNTs. In contrast, Raman signals from the inner shells showed no difference from the pristine DWNTs. The stability of the inner shells of fluorinated DWNTs was also confirmed from the photoluminesc...

Thermal stability and structural changes of double-walled carbon nanotubes by heat treatment

We describe, for the first time, the sequential structural changes of bundles of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) as a function of heat treatment temperature. DWNTs (inner diameters >0.9 nm) are structurally stable up to 2000 C. Above 2100 C, the outer walls of adjacent DWNTs start coalescing into large diameter tubes. At temperatures higher than 2100 C, three different types of structure...
